Professional development
Teacher education services
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) seeks to understand and address the continually evolving professional development (PD) needs of teachers and administrators working with the three IB programmes. To that end the teacher education services department (TES) aims to ensure that the IB's PD provision is fit for purpose in meeting the diverse needs of IB educators around the world.
In consultation with regional offices the TES team develops, implements and administers systems that promote and enhance the provision and evaluation of high quality PD activities. By working to extend the range of PD activities, offered in partnership with universities and other external providers, new and exciting professional learning opportunities for IB educators are emerging.
Given the IB's strategic goals and the rapidly growing number of IB World schools, TES has several key roles.
- Implementing a system to formally recognize teachers' understanding and experience in delivering each of the three IB programmes
- Working in partnership with universities to offer IB-approved PD activities
- Establishing and maintaining quality assurance procedures for the IB-approved PD provision
- Ensuring efficient data collection and analysis in order to identify and support the PD needs of educators
- Coordinating and administering the licensing of individual professional development consultants and partner organizations
The IB recognizes that teachers play a prime role in bringing about positive educational change. TES works to ensure that their professional learning needs are properly addressed through the establishment of effective policies, procedures and programmes.
