IBAP Regional Workshops at WAB

IBAP Regional Workshops were held at Western Academy of Beijing (WAB) from 26-28 October 2007, which brought together over 570 educators, workshop leaders and IB staff for training and professional development workshops in the PYP, MYP and DP.

The weekend workshops opened with a Chinese drumming ceremony in the Elementary School gym. David Randall, WAB Interim Director, welcomed participants, followed by an opening address by Edward Lawless, Professional Development Manager, IB Asia Pacific. He discussed the IB’s new community theme, ‘Sharing our Humanity’ and spoke about upcoming professional development opportunities in the region, including the IB Regional Conference, scheduled to take place in Beijing next October 2008.

Working with Associates and Universities

On 23 October, Edward Lawless, IB Asia Pacific Professional Education Manager, and Wang Hong, IBAP Regional Representative for China and Mongolia had a meeting with

Mr Ding Hongyu who is the Chairman of Beijing Municipal UNESCO Clubs Association. They discussed possibilities in cooperation for next year’s IBAP conference which will be held in Beijing.

One week later, Edward Lawless and Wang Hong visited Beijing Science and Technology University and met with its principal Ji Mingming and Zhou Yue who is the Manager of Chinese as a Second Language at the Beijing Normal University. They focused on cooperation in professional development for teaching Chinese as language B.

Event

The IB in China Symposium & Bilingual Teaching Demonstration in Guangdong Country Garden School will be held from 8-10 December 2007, during which a job-alike seminar for TOK taught in Chinese will also be held. The pilot schools that are doing TOK in Chinese will meet again after their last meeting in Beijing in April this year. Chen Zhen who will lead the job-alike team will do a presentation on 10 December. There will be demo-classes from pilot schools and sharing of TOK resources.

The IB sub-regional office would present the latest developments of the IB in China to all the participants. Discussion will also be held on principles and best practices in delivering the IB Chinese language courses.

The host school-Guangdong Country Garden School is going to demonstrate their teaching in bilingual courses and IB courses on 8 December. Many schools have registered for observing.

Kassandra Boyd from Hong Kong Academy is holding a Southern Network PYP Meeting on for the PYP coordinators within the area on 21 November 2007.

Lennox Meldrum from BISS held coordinators meetings within the Northern area.

Chi Heng Foundation Training Day for partner schools on HIV/AIDS Education and Action, 8 December 2007 at Beijing World Youth Academy

Students from three Beijing IB World Schools will be involved in the first of several student-led CAS joint-venture workshops in partnership with Hong Kong based Chi Heng Foundation to promote HIV/AIDS awareness and action to provide education support for over 4,000 AIDS impacted children across central China.
