Quarter One, 2007

Middle Years Programme

Celebrating the Middle Years Programme

- "New Year Greetings!"

We often talk about Asia Pacific’s rich diversity, and the celebrations throughout this first quarter of 2007 offer ample evidence of that diversity.  While most of us celebrated the new year under the Gregorian calendar (also known as the Western New Year) on 1 January 2007, celebrations for the Chinese and the Vietnamese only starts on 18 February with the Lunar New Year.  As for some parts of India, the start of a new year will not be till March or even April!

Anticipation and apprehension must be running high in schools on the southern hemisphere academic calendar.  After all, teachers and students here are experiencing one of the year’s most exciting moments – the start of a new school year!

We would like to offer a big welcome to the schools that were recently authorized, in December 2006, to offer the MYP in Asia Pacific.

They are:

Kodaikanal International School, Kodaikanal, India

Ecole Mondiale World School, Mumbai, India

Victoria Shanghai Academy, Hong Kong

Professional Development

MYP Technology Workshop       Introductory MYP in school

                                             workshop, Gandhi Memorial

                                             International School, Jakarta

Six MYP regional workshops were conducted in sunny Adelaide in January 2007.  The really positive feedback we got from the 140 participants around the IB Asia-Pacific region is truly encouraging and affirms what we are trying to do to ensure the quality of regional workshops. We sincerely appreciate workshop leaders’ hard work and their schools’ continued support.

Schools should consult the IB Asia-Pacific events 2007 calendar for upcoming workshops, and are reminded to register early to avoid disappointment.

To address issues related to MYP assessment, a MYP level 3 Assessment workshop is scheduled for 15-17 June 2007 in Melbourne, Australia.
