The IB Diploma Programme is designed as an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students, normally aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond. The programme is normally taught over two years and has gained recognition and respect from the world's leading universities.


Programme information & authorization

Schools wishing to offer the Diploma Programme must be authorized by the IB.

CONSIDERATION PHASE

Required activities
  • Read Guide to school authorization
  • Submit School information form online
  • Investigate IB philosophy
  • Purchase starter pack from the IB store
  • Analyze programme requirements
  • Identify necessary resources for programme implementation
  • Ensure participation of Head of school or designee in an IB Category 1 workshop. Schools are encouraged to send teachers and coordinator-designate to Category 1 workshops to ensure they can make an informed decision regarding programme implementation
  • Designate IB coordinator
  • Start to gain support of the school community
  • Decide on whether to implement the programme

Please note the application for candidacy is an online form submitted together with the supporting documents via a password protected platform. The regional office will give the school access to this platform once the school has paid the application fee below.

CANDIDATE PHASE: CONSULTATION PROCESS AND REQUEST FOR AUTHORIZATION

Required activities
  • Understand requirements for authorization as described in the Guide to school authorization
  • Set up staff accounts on the Online Curriculum Centre (OCC)
  • Work with IB-appointed consultant for a 2-day visit during candidate phase and 20 remote hours per candidate year.
  • Ensure participation of all DP subject teachers, TOK teachers, DP coordinator and CAS coordinator in appropriate IB Category 1 workshops. Schools are advised to meet the requirements early in the candidate phase to ensure teachers will be trained and course outlines will be properly and timely formulated.
  • Develop supporting documents related to policies, scheduling, subjects offered, course outlines and CAS outline for the Application for authorization
  • Organize collaborative planning
  • Update action plan according to the template in the Application for authorization
  • Prepare and submit Application for authorization using the Guide to school authorization

1st November to submit Application for authorization for verification visits from January to June

CANDIDATE PHASE: VERIFICATION VISIT

Required activities

*The earliest a school can host a verification visit  is into their 2nd year of candidacy
