Michael Matthews

Michael Matthews is the head of school at the Inter-Community School Zurich (ICS), a non-selective, English-medium school of 800 students that offers all three IB programmes (PYP, MYP and Diploma Programme) to students aged 3 to 18. The IB provides the curriculum and philosophical framework throughout the school.
Prior to arriving in Zurich in 2002, Michael had worked in IB World Schools in Thailand, Canada, the USA and Belgium, and was responsible for the introduction of IB programmes in two schools. Although now a Canadian citizen, Michael was born in Oxford, UK and holds degrees from Oxford and Durham Universities. Originally a physics and mathematics teacher, Michael has had to curtail his classroom appearances since becoming an administrator in 1989, but still teaches a class in the theory of knowledge. In 1996 he was elected a fellow of the Institute of Physics.
Michael is regularly involved in school accreditation visits with the European Council of International Schools, and authored the ECIS manual on teacher appraisal.
Michael is the chair of the Heads Council and is a member of the IB education and finance committees.
