World religions course
The IB is pleased to announce a new course within the Diploma Programme’s Group 3, Individuals and Societies. World religions will be available to all IB World Schools from September 2011 with first examinations taking place in May 2013. This challenging and exciting course has been in pilot phase for several years and is currently being taught in six countries across the globe.
Assessment of the course consists of a paper 1 and a paper 2, plus internal assessment. The focus is a study of five religions in paper 1, addressing three fundamental questions. In paper 2 there is a study of two religions in more depth.
The emphasis of the course is very much on a conceptual understanding of religion. Students are encouraged to explore the underlying currents in religion, seeking out commonalities as well as differences. The course develops the attributes of the learner profile, is truly internationally minded in nature and will promote intercultural awareness and respect while also encouraging learners to question the positive and negative aspects of religion.
